Modern Description: The Julian Harbor was an artificial harbor located in Istanbul’s modern Kumkapı district, close to the Church of Hagios Sergius and Bacchus (Küçük Ayasofya Camii). Its location is indicated by a curve in the Sea Walls.[1] Renamed in the 6th century as the Harbor of Sophia, it was the main port in Constantinople until the emergence of foreign merchant activities in the Golden Horn around the 11th century. It is known that the port was still operational at the time of the Fourth Crusade in 1204. After the Byzantines reclaimed the city in 1261, the harbor, known as the Kontoskalion, was used for naval operations, and it retained this function after 1453 when Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror (1444-1446, 1451-1481) renovated it.[2] The remaining section of the galley harbor was filled around 1585 by the grand vizier Sokullu Mehmet Paşa, who lived nearby and was disturbed by the smell emanating from the water {Michael Jones and Zeynep Olgun, Istanbul City Walls by
