Modern Description: Founded close to the Via Egnatia by the Roman emperor Trajan (AD 98-117) in the 2nd century AD. The ancient city is located in a well-watered area at the foot of the Aghios Georgios hill in the village of Loutros. Remnants of the fortification and scattered architectural members have survived, as well as a large tumulus with rich grave goods.
The city was an important administrative, military and ecclesiastical centre during the Early Christian period. Saint Glykeria was martyred here. It was fortified anew by Justinian I (6th century). Remains of the city wall and an Early Christian basilica with some of its sculpted decoration have survived.
