Modern Description: South of the village of Makri is a Neolithic settlement mound excavated since 1988 by N. Efthymiou of the Greek Archaeological service. With finds dating to ca. 6000 BC, it is one of the most important such excavations in the Balkans. Around 1000 BC there was a Thracian settlement. Near it, closer to the shore, is the so-called Cyclops Cave with two chambers and evidence of human use since the Neolithic, and also amphora finds suggesting a a Classical trading station and a more substantial Roman fortified station, once thought to be the site of Zone.
