Modern Description: City in ancient Bisaltia, close to the Strymon estuary. Founded by Ionian colonists from Andros in the mid-7th century BC. During the 6th century BC Argilus, in its turn, founded new colonies in the region: Cerdylium and Tragilus. Captured by Philip II of Macedon in 357 BC.
The ancient city extends over Palaiokastro hill, while remains of the harbour structures are visible in the sea, below the Thessaloniki-Kavala motorway. A section of the paved road (l. approx. 25 m) linking the city to the harbour is preserved. Parts of the city wall, remains of houses and streets (late 7th-mid - 4th century BC) have been uncovered on the hill.
The finds are exhibited in the Kavala Archaeological Museum.
