Modern Description: Kyrros was in important city already during the 4th century BCE. It was renowed for the sanctuary of Athena Kyrrhestis. Alexander the Great planned to build a big temple to honour the goddess but after his death the plan was not completed. There are also mentions of cults of Artemis Agrotera and Zeus Hypsistos. In the apricot groves south of modern Aravissos are concealed the remains of ancient Kyrros, whose location is known from an inscription found here. It may also be the location of the Roman 'mutatio Scurro' on the via Egnatia. Though substantial column capitals were found, only scattered blocks remain of the temple of Athena.
