Modern Description: Mentioned in the Iliad. Founded by Aeolians from Mytilene or Cyme in the 7th century BC. Flourished in the Classical period (5th-4th century BC) as a commercial harbour of Rhodope. A member of the 1st Athenian League. Later subject succesively to Macedonian and Ptolemaic rule. From 205 BC an independent city which enjoyed a new heday.
The ancient city is located in the Stentoris lagoon in the Hebrus (Evros, Meric) estuary, near modern Ainos. The acropolis is now dominated by a Venetian castle of the Gattilusi. Close to the city is the Ceryteian cave of Hekate.
In the Synekdemos of Hierokles (6th century AD) it is mentioned as capital of the province of Rhodopi. An episcopal see, it flourished during the 4th and 5th centuries. Significant fortification works from the reign of Justinian I (6th century). Building phases of this period can be distinguished in the wall of the acropolis.
