Modern Description: Archaeological park. Open-air sanctuary, possibly the Lucus of the Peutinger Tables.
At Rossano, the absence of a true temple has always seemed puzzling. It has been tentatively proposed that the sagrato (as D. Adamesteanu called it) was the monumentalisation of an Italic open-air place of cult. ... Perhaps the temple of Rossano, if it ever existed, was located farther away. The dedications to Mefitis (known by the19th c.) were walled into the church of the Madonna di Rossano, 1200 m to the west, adjacent to the spring which was led down to the sagrato. The importance of the sanctuary of Rossano is emphasised by the number of official dedications in the Oscan language found there; they include mention of a senate and several quaestors. In the Imperial era, the cult was transferred to the neighboring municipium of Potentia. (Olivier de Cazanove)
