Modern Description: Torretta di Pietragalla is major fortified site situated at the summit of a high Mountain range few kilometers north of the modern town of Pietragalla. It is located between the head of the Bradano River to the north and the valley of the Torrente Rosso to the south. Torretta di Pietragalla contains two fortification walls, a longer outer one and a smaller inner acropolis wall. Both are constructed of isodomic blocks with makers marks similar to Monte Croccia, and Serra di Vaglio. There a number of monumental entrance gates and towers and there seems to have been a large amount of habitation both interior and exterior of the walls. It is intervisible with Serra di Vaglio to the south and Montrone to the east but does not seem to have been part of any control network itself. Access to Pietragalla could have been regulated by Montrone through its control of the eastern approaches of the Bradano valley however this was not the only route to Pietragalla, although it was one of the easiest, especially coming from the Ionian coast.
