Modern Description: Ruoti is a site found on a high hill at the head of the Avigliano River. The existence of a sanctuary was noted by Salinardi and published in the 1970’s. He also reported at the same time the existence of an ‘antiche mura pre‐ romane’. The illustration at the right is taken from the quoted publication. Evidence of this wall was hard to find during present‐day reconnaissance on the ground. Ruoti does seem to be important in terms of controlling access points into (or out of) the Platano Valley. It is on the periphery of large and steep mountain range that rings the northern edge of the valley. It is intervisibile with two sites within the valley: Baragiano and Toppo Castelluccio but ‐ importantly ‐ is not in visual contact with either Raia San Basile or Ripa Della Scala. Ruoti seems something of an outlier in this network.
