Modern Description: Arethousa was a city in Mygdonia on the eastern shore of lake Volvi. It was part of the kingdom of Macedonia, although for a brief period at the beginning of the 4th century BCE it might have become independent. At that time, it was a member of the second Athenian League. Arethousa is identified with ancient remains near Rentina. Excavations in the late 1980s by Moschonisioti uncovered part of a circuit wall and the foundations of a circular tower dating from the 4th century BCE. Outside the city 129 graves dating from the middle of the 4th century to the middle of the 2nd century were excavated. The ruins from the Archaic and Classical period in a neighbouring hill belong probably to the town of Bormiskos. Aparently its inhabitants at some point abandoned their settlement and moved to Arethousa.
