Modern Description: A Neolithic settlement (5300-4500 BC) with post-frame and pisé dwellings, and paved communal areas for craft activities developed in the wider area of Thessaloniki.
Located in the innermost creek of the Thermaic gulf, Therme flourished mainly in Archaic times (7th-6th century BC) until the early 5th century BC. The Persian fleet launched its campaign in southern Greece from the city's harbour in 480 BC.
Some researchers place ancient Therme in the centre of modern Thessaloniki and others at Ano Toumba Thessaloniki with its port at cape Karabournaki (Mikro Emvolo), while a third opinion is that its centre and harbour were at Karabournaki. In recent years ancient settlements with remains of Archaic and Classical buildings have been excavated at the last two sites. The abundant movable finds attest to close relations with other parts of the ancient Greek world (Euboea, Ionia, Aeolis, Attica and Corinth).
