Modern Description: The site of Timmari consists of three connected hill tops rising to 440 meters high and situated about 12 kilometres west of modern‐day Matera. The main two hills ‐ San Salvatore and Camposanto ‐ have large plateaus and appear to have been fortified during the fourth century B.C. Evidence on the ground of the fortification wall is not easy to find in situ, however in the medieval church that now stands in the north‐west corner, il Chiesa di San Salvatore seems to have a number of well worked isodomic blocks used in its foundations. It would seem likely that these are reused material from the Lucanian fortification wall. Even though the wall is not extant its circuit would seem relatively clear and would have presumably followed the line of the plateau of the hill. Timmari’s visual focus seems to be to the north and east along the Gravina di Picciano and its fluvial valleys although it does have views over a good section of the middle‐Basento. Timmari however is only intervisible with one other site, Montescaglioso which is over 19 kilometres away and is near the limit for inclusion in any visibility network used in this study. The fact that Timmari is only intervisible with one other (distant) site may have more to do the limits of the study area rather than any design or intent of the contemporary population as it lies at the north‐east extreme of the zone of interest
