Modern Description: At 629m Baragiano lies on a high narrow ridge at the eastern end of the Platano valley near the confluence of the Platano, Avigliano and Picerno rivers. It is intervisible with a large number of contemporary centres throughout the valley, most notably Raia San Basile and also importantly Satriano in the neighbouring valley. It lies overlooking a pass that facilitates the most direct route from the Platano valley to Satriano through the contiguous valley of the Picerno/Tito river Sections of the fortification wall were reported as standing in 1889 by Lacava but were supposedly destroyed in the construction of roadworks associated with building of the new railway station soon after. Later re‐use of the isodomic blocks from the Lucanian fortification wall is evident in throughout the modern town in many buildings, most noticeably in the 16th century church ‘Chiesa dell'Annunziata’ at the eastern end of the town. Similarly isodomic blocks can also be seen re‐used in domestic housing throughout the town.
