Modern Description: The site of Paravela is approximately 1,5 km northwest of the present-day town of Argos Orestiko. Excavations were undertaken in 2009 by the University of Ioannina under the joint direction of Professors Dimitris Plantzos and Dimitris Damaskos, and continued since 2013 by the University of Athens, under the supervision of the Greek Service of Antiquities.
Thanasis Papazotos uncovered Early Christian basilicas and parts of the city’s fortification, He identified the site with Diokletianopolis, a city that existed until the Emperor Justinian moved its inhabitants to Kastoria. Papazotos excavated on the nearby site of Paravela a building, that probably served as the seat for the “Koinon (League) of the Orestai” – that united the cities of Orestis. The building consisted of a smaller assembly house and a larger, rectangular quadrangle. (http://argosorestikonproject.org/en/)
