Modern Description: Tempa San Nicola lies very close to the modern town of Garaguso. It is situated on a rocky outcrop just a few hundred metres to the west of the town overlooking a narrow stretch of the Salandrella valley. The site itself has been extensively excavated by Morel and Lucanian era isodomic wall with mason’s marks was identified. Tempa San Nicola appears to be part of a larger visibility network (the largest in the entire survey) which has Monte Croccia at its centre. It also forms along with Monte Boscone ‐ just under 3 kilometres away on the southern bank of the Salandrella ‐ an effective control network guarding the approach to the inner Monte Croccia network through the Salandrella valley. Completing this control network guarding access to the southern approaches to Monte Croccia is Tempa Cortaglia. Although not intervisible with Tempa San Nicola itself it is linked through the intermediary of Monte Boscone.
