Modern Description: Tempa del Monte is a site high in the Parco Regionale Gallipoli Cognato (978m) identified by Lacava in the late 19th Century. It sits within a region with one of the highest densities of Lucanian‐era fortified sites in the study area. It is close to ‘Platola’ another site identified by Lacava around the same time. Little is known about either and there is no modern literature giving any sort of information about either. Lacava describes Tempa Del Monte as being larger than Platola having a wall‐ line consisting of some large worked boulders and some that were part of the natural topography. He also reports the existence of extant habitation structures. During inspection on the ground traces of what seemed to be consistent with Lacava’s descriptions of the wall‐line were found but no trace of the capanne could be located. However a short distance from the site along the steep track that led to the summit a large amount of title and domestic pottery, dated generically to the fourth/third century, were found washed down from (presumably) the site above at Tempa del Monte. Although Tempa del Monte is intervisible with a high number of sites it would seem to have little involvement with any of the surrounding control networks. It has a limited viewshed and no control over any of the major transport routes in the area. Tempa del Monte
