Modern Description: Serra Antica sits on a high hill in the middle of an elevated mountain plateau between two river systems, the Basento and the Salandrella. It is reasonably close to Monte Croccia (approximately four kilometres away) and is in the middle of dense visual network. It is intervisible with eight surrounding sites. However, it has limited visibility over any of the nearby major communication routes (i.e. the surrounding river valleys) and does not seem to be part of any control network despite its high intervisibility. Its existence as a Lucanian fortified centre was reported a number of times during the late 19th Century, but by the mid‐1960s Cremonesi stated that sono scomparse le due cinte. Today there is little evidence on the ground of the existence of the two walls reported by Di Cicco and Lacava and a single observer point was used at the highest point of the area marked as ‘Serra Antica’ on the Istituto Geografico Militare 1:25,000 regional map.
