Modern Description: Pantaleno is a site situated in the middle of an area with one of the highest densities of Lucanian era fortified sites in the study area. It is located in a heavily wooded section of the ‘Parco Regionale Gallipoli Cognato’, just inland from where a long wide section of the Bradano Valley narrows considerably and then continues its course north‐west in the direction of Serra di Vaglio. The site itself has little or no mention modern academic literature since Lacava first publication in 1887 where he describes it as having fondazioni di mura come Croccia Cognato and says the site covered four or five hectares. A number of dry stone walls and habitation structures were identified near ‘Fte Panatlena’ in the ‘Parco Regionale Gallipoli Cognato’ in an area similar to that described by Lacava. Hellenistic roof tile and pottery fragments were also observed at the site. Some of the larger dry stonewalls had squared off masonry foundations. It was difficult to identify the circuit of a perimeter fortification wall so a single observer point was used. Lacava also mentions a small nearby site called ‘Tempa Della Ginestra’ about which he says: Li vicino trovasi un piccolo poggio, detto tempa delle ginestre ove sono gli avanzi di recinto molto ristretto A site very similar to this was located not far from Pantaleno, possibly the one mentioned by Lacava. ‘Tempa Delle Ginestra’ is given its own entry as a separate fortified centre in I Circuiti by D’Gennaro but given the proximity of the ‘Tempa Delle Ginestra’ to Pantaleno it was decided to incorporate both of them as part of the same viewshed system.
