Modern Description: Rifreddo is a site situated on the ridge of high mountain near the upper reaches of the Basento River. Today the area is heavily wooded and has extremely limited visibility from the ground. Given the limited amount of publication on the site, its specific location is hard to identify accurately. A single observer point has been used at the highest point of the general area specified by the IGM map. It is intervisible with four sites in total, the location of which two are questionable; Monte Li Foi and Monte Cupolicchio. As for the other two sites it is intervisible with, Satriano Vecchio and Serra di Vaglio, Rifreddo seems to play a limited role in the visibility networks of either. Serra di Vaglio has several other sites that more closely monitor movement from its southern accesses and Rifreddo would also have been of limited use in controlling access to Satriano Vecchio given its distance from the site. Compounding this issue (in the case of both Serra di Vaglio & Satriano Vecchio) is Rifreddo’s ‐ relatively ‐ limited viewshed, which although it covers a reasonable amount of territory it observes very little in the realm of river valleys and passes, vital access points in this particularly mountainous section of Basilicata.
