Modern Description: Satriano Vecchio is situated on a high hill overlooking a large high plateau. Being one the highest peaks in the area it has commanding views of the adjoining countryside and is at the centre of a number of transport routes. Satriano Vecchio has been excavated since the 1960’s and there is evidence for occupation well before the Lucanian period. Satriano is only intervisible with two other sites, Brienza and Baragiano. There is little evidence for the existence of a fortified centre at Brienza but strong evidence for the existence of major fortified site at Baragiano. Brienza itself is something of a ‘dead‐end’ visually as it only looks back at Satriano whereas Baragiano is intervisible with a large number of other centres in the area and ‐ along with Raia San Basile ‐ is the most important site in the Platano valley. The natural access route between the Platano Valley and Satriano is along the contiguous water course that flows from natural springs high in the mountains south of Tito and through to the Platano Valley. This system eventually reaches the Tyrrhenian coast has many names along its route. The section of interest here is: The ‘Fiumara di Tito’, ‘Fiumara di Picerno’ and the ‘Torrente Platano’ three names for a relatively short section (12 kilomteres or so) of river that flows between modern day Tito (close to Satriano Vecchio) and the centre of the Platano Valley. This route along the river valley forms a natural access point between the Platano Valley settlement system and the Satriano area.
