Modern Description: Aineia was probably founded in the 8th century BC by Corinthian colonists. Laid waste by Philip II in 348 BC. Involved in the synoecism of Thessaloniki but not abandoned completely until the 2nd century BC.
The ancient city has been discovered on the coastal mound of Toumba Tambia, NW of Nea Michaniona. Tombs of the Classical period (5th-4th century BC), with wall-paintings in the interior, have been excavated. These mural decorations are exhibited along with the grave goods in the Thessaloniki Museum. The architectural members from an Ionic temple, on display in the same museum, are perhaps from the renowned temple of Aphrodite, the site of which has yet to be located.
