Modern Description: The region of Mavropigi was inhabited since the Neolithic period (7th millennium) as it is attested by findings on the hill of Kastri and the settlement at the site of Fyllotsairi, one of the most ancient of the Balkans. It was an important hub on the east-west and north-south roads. Kastri has been excavated during the 1980s and the other sites since 1990 by the Greek Service of Antiquities under the supervision of Georgia Karamitrou Mentesini. At the site of Mikro Livadi the excavation uncovered graves of the sixth century with human and animal bones. The excavator suggested that some graves may belong to children that were buried along with their dog.
