Modern Description: Mentioned in the Iliad. Founded by Eretrian colonists in the late 8th century BC on the site of a former Thracian settlement. Conquered by Philip II of Macedon in 354 BC.
Sporadic finds from the ancient city in the villages of Nea Agathoupoli and Eleftherochori. Various graves have been found at the site of Paliokatachas. The archaic/classical town, built over Neolithic and Bronze age settlements, is under excavation (2016) by the University of California Los Angeles and Greek archaeological Service.
