Modern Description: Archaeologist Angeliki Kottaridi has proposed the upland plain south of Sfikia as the likely site of ancient Lebaia, mentioned in Herodotus and likely identical with Roman Alebia mentioned in the Mother of the Gods (Leukopetra) sanctuary inscriptions on the other side of the Haliakmon river. About 500 m south of Sfikia at a location call Keramargia is a partially excavated Neolithic settlement. Visible remains are few. About 1.5 km further S a large Archaic cemetery has been excavated at Kaloki Karya, again with little on the ground, and a late Archaic/Hellenistic cemetery nearby at Paliomelissa beside the Agioneri river. Also nearby, at a site called Marmari, pieces of white marble from a destroyed Ionic temple seem to have been destined for reuse in the Early Christian basilica of Agios Dimitrios, rebuilt in the late Byzantine period.
