Modern Description:
Tempa Cortaglia is located at the top of a high mountain peak which overlooks, to the south‐east, a large number of fluvial valleys that consist of various tributaries of the Salandrella River and to the north, the valley of the Salandrella itself. On a clear day it has views that extended all the way to the Ionian coast line, some 50 kilometres away. Also, despite its small size (1.9H), it seems to have been an important centre with a fortification wall constructed of large well‐made isodomic blocks – similar to those of Monte Croccia, Pietragalla and Serra di Vaglio. It has a number of gates and a tower and at the summit, inside the fortification walls and possible ‘public’ buildings are reported. It was partially excavated by Di Cicco in the 1890’s but never published. Tempa Cortaglia is intervisible with a large number of other sites, all roughly to the north. Tempa Cortaglia seems to be at the southern end of a large visibility network that centres on Monte Croccia. It also controls a large section of southern access routes to the members of this visibility network through its surveillance of the fluvial river valleys to the south‐east. Tempa Cortaglia is also helped in its control of these access routes by its connection with Monte Boscone and Garaguso who stand on either side of the high hills overlooking the passage of the Salandrella river into the heart of the Monte Croccia network.
