Modern Description: Atena Lucana is situated on a hill overlooking the Diano valley. It has two lines of fortification walls, one that would have surrounded ‐ roughly ‐ the modern town and a second near the foot of the valley. Patroni records that much of the lower wall was visible in his day and there is still a considerable stretch extant. The higher wall has all but disappeared. Patroni records a small stretch still visible under the Chiesa S. Maria Maggiore in 1897 but most of this has been cemented over and it would seem only a single block presently remains visible.
