Modern Description: Monte Pruno is a fortified settlement set on a large plateau near the confluence of two small streams overlooking what Ridegway describes as: the only feasible route between Poseidonia and the Vallo di Diano. The site seems to have been occupied since the mid‐sixth century and fortified in the mid‐fourth. The fortification walls are evident in small stretches along the south and west perimeters and include towers. Monte Pruno is only intervisible with one other site in the study area, Moio Della Civitella. This intervisibility is not particularly strong as Moio Della Civitella is right on the edge of the defined intervisibility limit (20km) in this study. Monte Pruno seems to be only tangentially connected with Moio Della Civitella and Moio appears to be a part of a different visibility network with its focus on the Greek settlement of Velia and the Tyrrhenian coast. Monte Pruno overlooks and (presumably) controlled the mountain pass which leads from the Diano Valley to the coastal plain of the Sele River and Paestum and its focus would seem to be there. The fact the Monte Pruno is only intervisible with one other (distant) site may have more to do the limits of the study area rather than any design or intent of the contemporary population as Monte Pruno reaches the north‐western limits of the study area.
