Modern Description:
The Saos massif, with its gorges, forests, abundant springs and waterfalls, is an impressive wilderness to explore for the climber and naturalist, but it can also be a dangerous place because of the rapid weather changes. Appropriate precautions need to be taken and the ascent should be made in company – ideally with a guide who can be found by asking at the hotels in Therma, or with a dedicated hiking guidebook. The peaks of Phengari and Ag. Giorgios are usually approached from Therma, and either one can be reached in a little over four hours of strenuous climb, with the same or more for the descent; but the intermittent paths, even in clear weather, are not easy to follow in the upper altitudes. It is always wise to consult local knowledge first for a prognostication of the weather: a local publication, ‘Samothraki, an Ecotourist and Trekking Map', available in the shops in Kamariótissa, is also of considerable assistance. There are other tracks on the hotter, drier southern slopes leading up from Prophitis Elias, and from Panaghia Krimniótissa to the Malakós spring and Aghia Thekla. Any days, however, spent rambling in this magnificent mountain massif will reward the explorer with some of the wildest and most impressive landscapes and views in the Aegean, as well as moments of unworldly and often disconcerting silence.
