Modern Description: Thyssos was a city probably on the northwestern part of Athos peninsula. Strabo notes that it was settled by Pelasgians from Lemnos. According to Thucydides it had a mixed (barbarian-Greek) population and its inhabitants were bilingual. During the 5th century it was a member of the Athenian League, but it revolted against Athens in 424/3 under the instigation of Brasidas. In 421, nevertheless it is mentioned as an ally of Athens. Some believe that it was located in the northwestern part of the peninsula between the monasteries of Zografou and Kastamonitou or between the monasteries of Zografou and Docheiariou and others in the northeastern part of Athos on a hill near the monastery of Pantokrator.
