Modern Description: Olophyxos was a city on the northern part of Athos peninsula at the site of either the monastery of Vatopedi or Iviron. Strabo notes that it was settled by Pelasgians from Lemnos. According to Thucydides it had a mixed (barbarian-Greek) population and its inhabitants were bilingual. During the 5th century it was a member of the Athenian League, but it revolted against Athens in 424/3 under the instigation of Vrasidas.
