Modern Description: Sermylia was a city in Chalkidiki. The city provided Xerxes with men and ships during the campaign of 480 BCE. During the 5th century it was a member of the Athenian League. In 432 the Peloponnesian army under Aristeus killed many inhabitants of Sermylia, an information that lets us deduce that Sermylians were not in good terms with the other Chalkidian cities at that time. But after the Peace of Nikias it was again a member of the Athenian League. During the 4th century it was a member of the Chalkidian Federation and was probably destroyed by Philip II after 348 BCE. During the 3d century it might have become a town dependent of Kassandreia. Some tentatively identify Sermylia with a settlement 3 km south of modern Ormylia.
