Modern Description: La Civita rises to a height of over 900 meters at the centre of the upper Agri valley. It has commanding views both up and down the Agri valley. Observation on the ground showed trace of black gloss pottery and tile. Also reused Hellenistic can be observed in the remains of a medieval structures on the site. As Adamesteanu observers, the outline of a fortification wall can be traced through aerial photographs, although Adamesteanu refers to it as an ‘ad aggere’ style he compares it to ‘Torre di Satriano’. Given the black gloss pottery evident on the site it has been included. La Civita would have been part of a larger ‘upper Agri’ visibility network along with Tramutola, Madonna Del Vetere and Marsico Nuovo which controlled the upper stretches of this valley.
