Modern Description: Castelli is a site located on a high hill close to modern day Tramutola in the upper Agri Valley. This part of the Agri valley is a wide fertile plain, with a large flat expanse of arable land and good access to water, eminently suitable for farming and similar to the situation in the neighbouring Diano valley. The site was first reported by Patroni in the late 19th century but has received little attention since. Evidence of extant sections of the Lucanian fortification wall mentioned by Patroni are not easily located but a small section that was in the area described was noted and recorded. However just a single observer point was used at the highest point of the site. Castelli has good visibility over large stretches of the upper Agri Valley and is intervisible with a number of other contemporary sites. It is part of a local visibility network that includes La Civita, Madonna Del Vetere and Marsico Nuovo, sites that are situated along alternate sides of this section of the valley.
