Modern Description: Civita di Padula lies on a high hill directly behind the modern township of Padula. It has a commanding position over the Diano valley, with a nearly uninterrupted view of the entire length of the Tanagro plain for some 30 km. It forms, along with Teggiano and Atena Lucana, an extended network which not only intensifies the surveillance of the central Diano Valley strip but also extends that surveillance to almost the entire length of the Valley, over 40 kilometres. Civita di Padula lies at the southern end of this visibility network and (along with Teggiano) overlooks the mountain pass that leads to Caselle in Pittari and eventually to Roccagloriosa. The extant walls Civita di Padula are of polygonal construction and are preserved to a height of over 3 metres in parts. The site itself is large with the original fortification walls encompassing an area of over 40 hectares. This is much larger than the other two centres it is intervisible with ‐ Teggiano (14h) and Atena Lucana (6.5h). Calabri at the northern end of the Diano valley would have made the natural end of this visibility network but given the problems accurately identifying its location this cannot be verified with any certainty.
