Modern Description: Teggiano is located on a large naturally defensible hill near the centre of the Diano Valley. It is on the left bank of the Tanagro Valley and stands close to the entrance of a pass that leads, via Monte Pruno, to the coastal plain of the Sele River and eventually Paestum. Ridgeway describes this as the only feasible route between Poseidonia and the Vallo di Diano. (Ridgway 1994/95:88) The site has been continuously occupied since at least the 4th Century BC with both Roman and Medieval phases. The line of the Lucanian fortification wall is not entirely clear and much of it seems to have been incorporated into buildings and defensive structures of later phases. However, the natural topography of the hill and street names such as Strada delle Mura seem to indicate the path of some of the original wall line. Teggiano is only intervisible with two other sites, Civita di Padula and Atena Lucana, both at either ends of the Diano Valley. On its own Teggiano’s viewshed covers a large portion in the centre of the Valley ‐ 23 kilometres in total ‐ but when Civita di Padula and Atena Lucana are added to this viewshed, this range is extended to over 40 kilometres. Basically the entire length of Valley floor. Teggiano – Isodomic circuit wall blocks exposed in Via Antonello Senseverino Teggiano
