Modern Description: Mentioned in the Iliad. After the mythical Carians and Thracians, the island was inhabited by the Tyrrhenians c. 700 BC. In the late 6th century BC Athens settled colonists here. The worship of Hermes Imbramos and the Great Gods was popular here, in parallel with Samothrace and Lemnos.
The ancient city was located in the NE part of the island (present Kaleköy / Kastro). Defensive walls and part of the theatre have been discovered on the acropolis, and an ancient mole on the shore.
Naulochos (Pyrgos) was another harbour, on the coast facing Lemnos. The sanctuary of the Great Gods is sited at the monastery of Saint Constantine. There are retaining walls of the Hellenistic period in the area of Roxado.
