Modern Description: Akrothooi was a city on the southern part of Athos peninsula. Strabo notes that it was settled by Pelasgians from Lemnos. According to Thucydides it had a mixed (barbarian-Greek) population and its inhabitants were bilingual. Akrothooi helped Xerxes construct the passage for his ships and provided to him men and ships. During the 5th century it was a member of the Athenian League, but it revolted against Athens in 424/3 under the instigation of Vrasidas. Scholars suggest that Akrothoi was located at the site of the monastery of Megisti Lavra, near the Skiti of Saint Anna, the Nea Skiti, or the Monastery of Saint Paul, where various remains are visible.
