Modern Description: Moio Della Civitella is located on a high hill overlooking valley of the Alento River close to the Tyrrhenian coastline. It is close to the Greek (Phocaean) colony of Velia. The high plateau which constitutes the settlement of Moio Della Civitella is surrounded by an isodomic wall complete with monumental gates. Much of the wall is still standing, sometimes up to a height of two metres. The remains of a number of 4th century (and earlier) habitation structures are visible near the summit of the plateau. Moio Della Civitella is intervisible with two sites. The first, ‘Torricelli’ is a small site ‐ 0.5 hectares ‐ that overlooks the Alento River and provides extended control over the access to and from the coastline ‐ and Velia ‐ which is plainly visible from this site. The second site intervisible with Moio Della Civitella is Monte Pruno, which is some distance from Moio Della Civitella at 19.5 kilometres and just inside the maximum radius defined that delimits intervisibility amongst sites. Velia is much closer to Moio Della Civitella than Monte Pruno and may have had far more influence on the existence of Moio Della Civitella than Monte Pruno, which was a large indigenous centre in its own right with its own separate geographical sphere of influence.
