Modern Description: Founded by Athenian colonists in the 6th century BC in a strategic position at the S tip of the Thracian peninsula, in order to control the route to the Hellespont. The sanctuary with the tomb of Protesilaos (see no. 92), where Alexander the Great sacrificed during his Asian campaign, was renowned.
