Modern Description: The settlements that developed on two adjacent hills on the W coast of Cassandra are dated respectively to the Neolithic and the Bronze Age.
Sane was founded by Eretrian colonists in the 8th century BC. It lay in the area of the present Sani Hotel and its acropolis was on the peninsula where the Byzantine Stavronikitas tower now stands. In the area of the hotel marina altars with burnt offerings and a small lustral basin belonging to an open-air Archaic sanctuary of Artemis Pythia have been brought to light (finds mid-7th - 4th century BC, in the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum).
In Kypsa bay, where the Sani campsite is situated, a Roman country house with mosaic floors has been excavated. In the area of Gerani, remains of a Roman settlement established to exploit the nearby salt pans.
