Modern Description: Marcellino is a site situated on the edge of high ridge line just outside of modern township of Roccanova. It is situated near a seasonal stream that flows through the ‘Fossa di Roccanova’ which leads to the Serrapotamo River a tributary of the Sinni. It is almost equidistant between the two major valleys of the region, the Sinni and the Agri, however it seems to face ‐ morphologically at least ‐ in the direction of the Sinni, with of access provided by the ‘Fossa di Roccanova’ and Serrapotamo river passages. Visually it is oriented towards the Sinni as wellbeing intervisible only with one other site, Cersosimo. Being in visual communication with Cersosimo brings it into a network orientated towards the Ionian coastline. Identify the location of the site itself was not easy, and there is little in the way of extant wall‐line. However after examining published maps and excavation plans of the site a correlation can be made with the small amount of extant wall‐lines and a (limited) circuit extrapolated. Large amounts of Lucanian era ceramics on the surface helped confirm the area. Although there is a lack of general information about the size of the settlement it must have been significant given the amount of ceramics recovered from the excavations at the site, settlement and graveyard.
