Modern Description: Caselle in Pittari is a fortified site reported in the ‘Valle del Noce’ that is often connetced with the much larger and visually more prominent fortified settlement of Roccagloriosa. It is found on an elevated plateau at around 400m high surrounded by two streams, The Vallone Grande and the Vallone Picollo. Both join at the southern extent of the site to form the Sciarapotamo river. The site has been extensively excavated but the location of the fortification wall is still tentative. The best candiate is at the northern end of the site, a wall which Gualtieri describes as ‘of indeterminate date’ primarily because of the lack of Hellenistic tile used in its construction (as opposed to its re‐use of such tile in much of the post‐classical walling on the site) but is still hesitant to confirm it as ‘Lucanian’. The two streams seem to form the other natural borders of the site and large boulders can be seen reinforcing the line of the of the ‘Vallone Grande’
