Modern Description: Herakleion was a city at the frontier between Thessaly and Macedonia. The Macedonian kings tried to annex it but it managed to retain its autonomy. It was a member of the Athenian League between 430/29 and 425/4. The site was identified by travelers Clarcke and Heuzey at the beginning of the 19th century. The site of the city is identified with modern Platamonas. Excavations at the site of Krania uncovered the port of Herakleion. There are visible remains of the fortifications dating probably from the 5th century BCE on the bottom of the hill near the river.
