Modern Description: The city was built on the slopes of Olympus, where, tradition relates, the musician Orpheus was born and buried, and the Leibethrian Muses were worshipped. It was destroyed completely when the Sys torrent flooded.
The acropolis has been located in the area of Kanalia, between the rushing waters descending from Olympus, near modern Skotina. Sections of the fortification are preserved among the dense vegetation. Of particular importance for the prehistory of Macedonia are the Late Bronze Age (13th-12th century BC) cemeteries with copious grave goods. The finds are housed in the Dium Archaeological Museum.
