Modern Description: Founded by Aeolians from Mytilene c. 700 BC. Already at that time it was believed that Achilles was buried here. The so-called 'tomb of Achilles' (Sivritepe), at which Alexander the Great probably offered sacrifices, is a Hellenistic tumulus.
Remains of the ancient city on the Yassitepe hill, 2 km SW of the village of Yeniköy.
