Modern Description: City in Perrhaebia at the W entrance to the Vale of Tempe. It controlled the pass between Macedonia and southern Greece. Flourished mainly from the 6th to the 4th century BC. A centre of many military operations during Hellenistic times.
The ancient city extended over three hills in semicircular arrangement, 2 km from modern Gonnoi. The Archaic wall and ruins of an apsidal temple within a peribolos have survived (perhaps of Athena Polias, original building 7th century BC, rebuilt in the 4th or 3rd century BC, Archaic and Hellenistic terracotta tiles in the Volos Museum). The Hellenistic wall with gateways and towers is preserved on all three hills. Inside the NW gate is a sanctuary, perhaps of Artemis. Various building remains at the foot of the hill are thought to belong to the agora.
