Modern Description: Monte Calimaro is a mountain lying at the end of the valley of the Totora River. Its steep slopes and imposing summit are clearly visible for the entire length of the valley and surrounds up to the confluence of the Noce and the coastline. It is also known as ‘Aieta Vetere’ following the local legend that the nearby modern town of Aieta was originally located on the summit of Monte Calimaro. It was not possible to personally visit the site as landslides had blocked the passage to the summit. However aerial photography and published descriptions make possible to propose a tentative outline of the wall circuit. It is only intervisible with one other site, Tortora with which it is obviously connected, probably in a defensive role as Monte Calimaro controls one of the few access points in the area between the coast and the inland.
