Modern Description: Foundations of an Ionic temple of the late 4th c. BC were excavated in 1952 on the lower slopes of Gardiki hill, near the village of Rodotopi. The finds include statuettes of a feminine deity and loom weights, along with a fragmentary inscription to Agemona, perhaps Artemis Hegemone. A fragmentary relief, found in Ioannina but said to come from near Rodotopi, mentions Zeus and would support the traditional identification of this temple with that of Zeus Areios, called by Plutarch the sacred capital of the Molossians, on the assumption that ancient Passaron is located nearby at Megalo Gardiki rather than, as archaeologist Georgia Pliakou hypthesizes, in the city of Ioannina.
