Modern Description: Archaeological work in the 1990s and substantial excavation and site planning to make the site visitable ca. 2010 have improved understanding of this densely built citadel, which seems to have been fortified systematically at the beginning of the 3rd c. BCE, and abandoned ca. 100 BCE, to be resettled in late Roman times.
Two ancient names have been assigned to this site, Eurymenai and Tekmon, with no decisive evidence favoring either. Eurymenai was an early and important city (EphArch [1956] 1f; D.S. 19.88), most probably identified with the largest site in the plain of Ioannina, a craggy limestone ridge called Kastritsa on the S side of the Lake of Ioannina. It was defended by a massive circuit wall ca. 3000 m long and was densely inhabited. The fortifications were extended at various periods and include gateways and towers of different kinds. It stands at a nodal point in the communications of Epeiros. The area has yielded Prehistoric, Classical, and Hellenistic pottery. (N.G.L. HAMMOND)
