Modern Description: The hill of Mastilitsa, 10.5 km NNW of Igoumenitsa as the crow flies, is reached by heading W from Ragio village and turning due N on a farm road to cross the Kalamas river. No road access to the hill. The site controls the route inland along the Kalamas river. Excavations in 2000 revealed an fortified settlement dating from the late 6th c. BCE. Three preserved gates, with the walls best preserved on the S side, with building foundations, wells, and drainage channels in the rock. Lower and 400 east of the walled settlement, a large (13.5 x 9.5m), well-built structure was excavated, apparently a sanctuary in use from the Archaic to Hellenistic period. Cist graves from the same period were excavated on the NE slopes of the hill. A 2nd c. BCE to 3rd c. CE farm complex was also explored further west near the modern river mouth.
